Two businessmen, who allegedly stole a container with goods valued at N1.2 million, on Thursday appeared before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
John Obi, 21, and Benson Nwakuna, 40, who both reside at Apapa area of Lagos, are facing four charges of conspiracy, stealing, forgery and receiving stolen goods.
The prosecutor, Insp Rita Momoh, told the court that Obi conspired with others at large and stole a 40ft long container, property of Delmas Shipping Company.
Momoh alleged that the accused, after forging the documents of the container, later gave it to Nwakuna, who knew it was stolen.
According to her, the accused committed the offences on Feb. 4, at Kirikiri Town, Lagos.
She said that the offences contravened Sections 285, 326, 363 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 326 prescribes 15 years jail term for receiving stolen goods while Section 285 stipulates three years imprisonment for stealing.
According to Section 409, conspiracy attracts a two-year prison sentence.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr P.A. Ojo, granted them bail in the sum of N500, 000, with two sureties in like sum.
Further hearing in the case has been fixed for July 10.
