A trader, Ikechukwu Ikegbunam, 38, on Wednesday appeared in a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Wuse zone 2 for beating up a shop attendant.
Ikegbunam of Neighbourhood Shopping Centre, Wuse Zone 2, is charged with two counts of criminal force and assault.
The prosecutor, Police corporal Francis Tanko, told the court that on May 29, Ms Jennifer Nnadozie, of Shettima, Mugunno Crescent, Utako, Abuja, reported the accused at the Wuse Divisional Police Headquarters, Abuja.
He said that Nnadozie had reported that on same day, she had gone to Ikegbunam’s shop and asked the accused’s secretary if he could take some newspapers to read.
According to Tanko, the accused ordered Nnadozie out of his shop and before she could move away, he slapped her and started beating her.
He told the court that Nnadozie was taken to the Wuse General Hospital where she received treatment.
Tanko said that the offence contravened the provision of Section 265 of the Penal Code.
If found guilty, Ikegbunam is liable to one year in prison or fine or both. The accused pleaded not guilty.
The Judge, Mrs Chinyere Nwacheonwu, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000 with a reliable surety in like sum who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
She adjourned the case until July 1 for hearing.
