An Upper Area Court in Zuba, the Federal Capital Territory, during the week sentenced two men and a woman to four months in prison each for attempting to deceive a trader with a fake chieftaincy title.
The convicts are Munir Muhammadu, 30, Aisha Kabir, 52, and Kamal Abdulmumuni, 25.
They are charged with two counts of criminal conspiracy and attempt to cheat.
The presiding judge, Mallam Aminu Sa’ad, sentenced them after they pleaded guilty.
Sa’ad, however, gave the convicts an option of N25, 000 fine each.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Haruna Danlami, told the court that the convicts confessed that they planned to swindle a trader, Alhaji Muhammadu Sani of Dei-Dei, Abuja of an undisclosed amount of money.
Danlami said the convicts approached Sani with the intention of deceiving him to part with some amount of money on the pretext that they could arrange a chieftaincy title for him.
He said the complainant did not agree with them and immediately alerted the police.
The prosecutor said the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 95 and 96 of the Penal Code.
