On Wednesday in Abuja an area court in Kado sentenced two scavengers, Mohammed Ibrahim, 22, and Yari Nasiru, 21, to five months imprisonment each for stealing two phones from one Abubakar Suleiman.
The convicts live at Jabi Garrage.
The Presiding Officer, Malam Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced the convicts after they pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of joint act and theft.
Sadiq sentenced the convicts to two months imprisonment for joint act and three months for stealing.
The court also ordered the convicts to pay N65,000 as compensation to the complainant.
The court, however, gave the convicts an option of N5,000 each for the joint act and N5,000 for theft.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Simeon Ibrahim, had earlier told the court that the convicts committed the offence on March 21 by conspiring to rob Suleiman of his blackberry and Nokia phones.
He said that the convicts stole the property while Suleiman was sleeping in his car at the Jabi neighbourhood of Abuja.
Ibrahim further told the court that Suleiman, of Utako Village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station after the incident on the same day.
“As I was sleeping in my car at Jabi Park, after a hard day work, I woke up and discovered that my blackberry and Nokia phones were gone,” he said.
Sulaiman explained that the blackberry was valued at N65,000 while the Nokia phone was worth N10,000.
The convicts confessed to the charges, saying they sold the Blackberry for N4,000 but were silent on the Nokia phone.
The prosecutor said their offences contravened the Penal Code.
