The British government said on Friday that Dr Dhanoun Dharmasena, a doctor at a London hospital, and Hasan Mohamed would be prosecuted for Female Genital Mutilation.
This was the first time such exercise was coming up in Britain, even though it has become illegal in Britain since 1985.
In 2003, the maximum penalty was increased from five to 14 years imprisonment.
Alison Saunders, Director of Public Prosecutions said Dharmasena was alleged to have repaired genital mutilation of a woman, who had just given birth in November 2012, and also said to have carried out FGM himself.
He said Mohamed faces one charge of intentionally encouraging FGM and a second of aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring Dharmasena to perform the procedure.
